7 Steps To Building Self-Confidence by Suzanne Scheideker Cook

“Confidence is a habit that can be developed by acting as if you already have the confidence you desire to have.” - Brian Tracy

A few nights ago, we were at our favorite sushi restaurant. I had ordered a glass of plum wine, and when the young server brought it, he announced, “Here is your lemon drop martini.” Then he realized his mistake and said, “I’m such a dummy. I meant your plum wine. I’m sorry.” My reply to him was, “You’re not a dummy and I knew what you meant so there is no need to apologize.” He seemed genuinely surprised by my response and thanked me. This encounter made me reflect on actions that I do to build and maintain my self-confidence and positive self-image which are shared below.

  • Step #1 – Never put yourself down. (This takes practice.)

  • Step #2 – Turn that little, negative voice off in your head that says, “I don’t deserve it. It’s way beyond me.” Give yourself a chance and then give yourself more chances until you succeed.

  • Step #3 – Collect a set of affirmations that reinforce your strengths. Some examples are: I have a gift of uplifting others. I have been blessed with creativity. I have a strong mind and am eager to learn new things. I can do anything I set my mind to.

  • Step #4 – Pick one of your affirmations and start your morning by smiling in the mirror and saying one of your affirmations out loud. (You may feel a little silly at first but this really works.)

  • Step #5 – Do an action that reinforces your affirmation. For instance, if you picked, “I have a gift for uplifting others,” brighten someone else’s day with an act of kindness.

  • Step #6 – Other people’s “bad days” are exactly that – their “bad days”. Don’t let their bad days become your bad days. Nasty people have a way of trying to take you down a notch – do not play this game and let them steal your self-confidence.

  • Step #7 – Walk strong. Hold your head up high, square your shoulders, and stand up straight. You will be surprised how these physical actions make you feel better about yourself. Good posture also makes a positive first impression on others.

You deserve to be confident. Remember there is only one you in the world and you have a lot to offer.
